  • A flounder is an ocean dwelling flatfish
  • it is usually found in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
  • there are 2 types of flounder: Summer Flounder and Winter Flounder
  • Winter Flounder:
  1. found in shallow waters in North Atlantic
  2. spends the summers in deep water and winter in the shallow waters, such as creeks, bays, estuaries, canals, and along beaches
  3. they are native from Canada to Gerogia along the East Coast
  • Summer Flounder:

  1. found on East Coast of U.S. and Canada
  2. Very abundant from North Carolina up to Massachusetts
  3. their native habits range from inlets, estuaries, bays, canals, creeks, and along shallow beaches
  4. they stay in the water until autumn then they go to deeper water

  • flounders eat anything from sandlance, menhaden, atlantic silverside, mummichog killifish, small bluefish, porgies, squid, shrimp, to crabs
  • Summer flounder slightly differ from winter flounder:
  1. summer flounder have their eyes on the left side of their bodies and have teeth
  2. Winter flounder have eyes on the right side of their body and dont have teeth

  • flounders can blend in to the bottom of the ocean and thats where they feed
  • they can also bury into sandy or muddy bottoms
  • flounders only fall prey to predators bigger than them such as groupers and sharks
  • they also are eaten by humans
  • most of the flounders eventually grow big enough to fend for themselves against smaller or same sized predators
